The Orillia Opera House Dance Festival
is operated under the City of Orillia, Department of Culture and Heritage.
DANCE STYLES
ANY ROUTINE PERFORMED IN POINTE SHOUES MUST BE
ENTERED IN “POINTE” OR “OPEN” STYLE OF DANCE.
ACROBATIC
Routine must contain 90% dance & acrobatic technique/choreography. Flexibility and contortionist moves must be limited to 10%.
BALLET
Routine must consist of ballet technique and include classical steps and movements. No restriction on style of music.
CONTEMPORARY
Routine must consist of a combination of modern, jazz and lyrical techniques with ballet fundamentals and should emphasize artistic expression and unique choreography.
DEMI CHARACTER
Routine must contain recognizable dance technique and the character(s) must be portrayed throughout the performance.
ETHNIC
Routine must contain steps and movements associated with a specific culture or tradition, such as Highland, Irish, Flamenco, Mazurka, etc.
HIP HOP
Routine must consist of street-wise jazz or contemporary jazz considered hip-hop or funk.
NO lyrics containing language of a sexual or violent nature will be permitted. Failure to comply could result in disqualification.
IMPROVIZATION
Adjudicators choose music. Participants hear music 3 times and are removed to self-choreograph without benefit of the music. After approximately 15 minutes, participants perform before an audience.
Junior – 1.25 minutes Intermediate – 1.5 minutes Senior – 1.75 minutes
JAZZ
Routine must consist of primarily jazz technique. Acrobatic tricks and tumbling passes are limited to four (4) per routine – strictly enforced!
LYRICAL
Routine must demonstrate emotion, balance, extension and control while expressing a theme and/or lyrics through dance movements. NO lip-synchronization will be permitted
MODERN
Routine must exhibit creativity and expression of music through modern dance technique. Free-style bare feet. Singing of lyrics is NOT permitted.
OPEN
Routine will be of mixed dance styles or of a style not described in any of the others listed here.
POINTE
Routine must consist primarily of Pointe technique, using classical steps and movements, all in Pointe shoes. No restriction on style of music.
SONG & DANCE
Routine may consist of any dance style. Words MUST be sung and NOT mimed by performers. Accompanying music must not contain lyrics. Wireless mic’s are permitted, supplied by the performer and presented to the technician at least 24 hours in advance.
STAGE
Routine must portray a character throughout from a play, movie, television or stage production using any form of dance. Lip-synchronization is allowed.
TAP
Routine must consist of at least 80% tap technique. NO tap sounds on accompanying music will be permitted.
